ClassicRockEsoterica.com was created to help preserve the musical culture of the sixties and provide a forum for its devotees.
Musically, in our collective consciousness, the period we remember as the sixties started in February 1964 with the Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and ended in the cold, night air of Altamont, California, in December 1969. The music was in a death struggle as the seventies took hold.
It's important to keep things in context when discussing or listening to music of that era. In 1967, Jimi told us we'd "never hear surf music again." Eric Burdon declared in Monterey, "religion is being born," while four actors behaving like the Keystone Cops on acid were on television singing, "Hey, hey we're the Monkees!" and begging to be taken seriously.
If you were fortunate enough to experience underground radio, you'll remember how eclectic the music was in that era without playlists. Jimi Hendrix might be followed by Joan Baez, B.B. King and Miles Davis. Commercials were far and few between.
Real underground stations didn't accept recruiting ads for the U.S. Army.

By 1972 a whole new generation of Pat Boones were waiting in the shadows, inoffensive and ready for their fifteen minutes. Disco would be marked as the new, hip alternative to all that sixties nonsense. Suddenly materialism and shallowness were in vogue. Modern country was spun off from rock to complete the transformation.
Here we are at the end of the first decade of the twenty-first century. When I look at photos from the era, we look so young. It had truly been a social and cultural revolution that had inexplicably collapsed and I asked myself, "What happened?"
Over decades I read everything I could find and accumulated a large personal library and collection of relevant material and memorabilia. I love learning new things about the people and places that inspired and were inspired by the turbulent era and I'd like to share some of them with you.
I hope you enjoy the site. Please tell your friends about it and send them the link.
